Stewardship and Spiritual Connection

By Bonnie Matuseski, President

Madeline is much more than an island surrounded by water and covered with trees; it holds a deep and lasting connection for those who visit. This bond evokes a sense of belonging similar to that in ancient Celtic wisdom: it is reminiscent of a cathedral formed by earth, sea, and sky – a place where humanity seeks relationship with all aspects of nature. Such wisdom teaches us that the Earth is not merely a resource to be used, but a living entity intimately intertwined with the human soul. This soulful yearning inspires us to return to Madeline Island, seeking its beauty and spiritual resonance.

Our Commitment to Stewardship:

For those moved by the beauty and spirit of Madeline Island, there is an obligation to serve as stewards of its land and heritage. The Wilderness Preserve (MIWP) has embraced this mission for the past 39 years. Through grassroots support and the dedication of volunteers, MIWP has evolved into an enduring land trust and valued community partner.

Ongoing Work and Achievements:

• Land Preservation: MIWP continues its land-conservation efforts with new critical acquisitions. Fifty acres were recently purchased, and an additional 20 acres were generously donated by the Reiman family.

• Island-wide Invasive Species Control: For the last 15 years MIWP has carried out large-scale control efforts to combat invasive buckthorn, honeysuckle, and Japanese barberry on Madeline Island. Our investment has led to tangible improvements on public, Wilderness Preserve, and private properties.

• Education Outreach: MIWP supports educational programs that foster understanding and appreciation of the Island’s natural environment. This includes natural history lectures at the Island Museum and guided hikes.

• Trails: Significant time, labor, and resources go into improving access to and use of the north end trails. Enhancements in the past few years include providing parking at trailheads, installing duckboards, rerouting paths, adding trail signage, and building small bridges to ensure accessibility and enjoyment.

Gratitude and Legacy:

We are grateful for your membership and financial support, which are vital to the ongoing work of MIWP. Please consider including MIWP in your estate planning, ensuring a legacy for Madeline Island and its natural wonders.
