Wild Madeline Project Update: Coyote

Some may think coyotes, Canis latrans, were put on this earth to be the tricksters of the natural world.

This is not the case, they happen to be an essential part of our ecosystems. Coyotes are relatively common on Madeline Island and are considered by many to be mesocarnivores.

The word “mesocarnivores” essentially means intermediate-sized carnivore. For carnivores, size means a lot. Essentially, they aren’t the “top dog” for the system.

On Madeline Island, however, coyotes may be the “top dog” as we have not yet detected wolves with our trail cameras.
