Wild Madeline Project Update, July 2022: The Cameras Have Been Installed!

Despite all the bugs, thunderstorms, and hot weather, all the camera traps for the Wild Madeline project have been installed!

We are delighted to announce that the cameras are up and taking photos as you read this.

Professor Erik Olson of Northland College, and his research assistants, Sydni Bennette and Bridget Stroede, ventured out to Madeline Island in mid-June to install the cameras. They hope to use the photos to assess the wildlife community of the island and compare it to some of the other islands of the Apostle Islands Archipelago, as well as the mainland.

If you happen to come across any of the cameras, please do not touch them, give a little wave and continue on.

They plan to check on the cameras at various times throughout the year and once they collect the data from each camera, they will then convert the photos into data. This process takes time, but it allows them to analyze the photos captured on the cameras to make inferences about how the wildlife community is doing on the island.

They can’t wait to share the photos and new insights they gain with all of you!
