In 2020, Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve began sponsoring the Madeline Wild Project. Northland College Professor Erik Olson and Intern Sydni J Bennette are leading the research. This past June they installed 25 cameras around Madeline Island to monitor and identify wildlife. They returned in August to check the cameras and were excited to find that the cameras caught a curious doe, lazy bear cubs, a brave Sandhill crane, a coursing coyote, a buck in velvet, owls and broad winged hawks hunting. These and other species were observed in just a few cameras.  More pictures and videos will be forthcoming. The images capture data which will be shared to analyze the wildlife present throughout the Apostle Islands.
