Wild Madeline Project Update: White-Tailed Deer

You may know them from running in front of your car or eating your bird seed, I’m talking about white-tailed deer! Or, to us science folk, Odocoileus virginianus.

As you can see, this buck’s antlers look to be almost fuzzy. This is because he is in velvet! Meaning, he is working on growing his antlers. Eventually he will rub that velvet off and sport a set of antlers. Those antlers will be valuable during the rut later in the fall but will eventually fall off as a shed.

This young lad is awfully curious about our camera traps, just as you all are! We can’t wait to share more with you all about what we have found on the island!
