Wild Madeline Project Update, July 2022:  The Cameras Have Been Installed!

Despite all the bugs, thunderstorms, and hot weather, all the camera traps for the Wild Madeline project have been installed! We are delighted to announce that the cameras are up and taking photos as you read this. Professor Erik Olson of Northland College, and his research assistants, Sydni Bennette and Bridget Stroede, ventured out to Madeline Island in mid-June to install the cameras. They can’t wait to share the photos and new insights they gain with all of you!

Attendees from MIWP and the Madeline Island Book Club enjoyed a very informative and interesting presentation by Alan Brew, Director, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, Professor of English, Northland College, about Sigurd Olson, his life, his writing career, and the selected books. Early Summer Foraging for Mushrooms. A Rainy But Informative Hike!

Our first Forest Classroom activity of the season was well-attended! We hiked with Samantha Dobson on (and off) the Capser Trail in search of Oyster mushrooms. Because mushrooms are 85-90% water, rain is great for mushroom hunting, although right after the rain when the sun comes back out is the best time. You always learn something new when you hunt mushrooms with Samantha! The next mushroom walk is September 10th. Mark your calendars now!
